A friend mentions they received their tax refund in August, and your stomach drops. You realise you might not have lodged your tax return yet.
Here’s the good news. If you’re lodging your own 2025–26 tax return, the effective deadline is Monday 2 November 2026, because 31 October falls on a Saturday. If you plan to use a registered tax agent, however, you generally need to be on their client list by 31 October to access the relevant agent lodgement program. If you’ve missed that registration cutoff, contact a registered tax agent promptly to discuss your options.
This guide explains the 2025–26 tax return deadlines, what late lodgement can cost, and the practical steps you can take to get your tax return sorted.
The short answer: If you lodge your own 2025–26 tax return, the standard 31 October deadline moves to Monday 2 November 2026 because 31 October falls on a Saturday. If you want a registered tax agent to lodge for you, you generally need to join their client list by 31 October to access their lodgement program. If you’ve missed your deadline, lodge as soon as possible. Late-lodgement penalties may apply, but they are not automatic in every case.
When Is the Income Tax Deadline for 2025–26?
If you’re preparing your own return through myTax or on paper, the standard income tax return lodgement deadline is 31 October each year. You’ll also see it called the tax return deadline or tax filing deadline, but these terms refer to the date by which you must meet your lodgement obligations.
In 2026, 31 October falls on a Saturday. Under the usual next-business-day rule, the effective self-lodgement deadline moves to Monday 2 November 2026.
Does the Weekend Really Give Me Extra Time?
Technically, yes. Practically, not much. myTax works on weekends, but ATO phone lines don’t, so if myGov won’t link on Sunday night, there’s nobody to call.
Our advice: Treat Friday 30 October as your personal deadline and keep Monday as the safety net.
Tax Deadline Dates You Need to Know This Season
Here are the dates that matter for individuals and sole traders lodging a 2025–26 return.
| Date | What’s due | Who it applies to |
| 31 October 2026 (Saturday) | Be added to a registered tax agent’s client list | Anyone who wants an agent to lodge for them |
| 2 November 2026 (Monday) | Lodge your own return or a non-lodgment advice | Self-lodgers |
| 21 November 2026 (Saturday) | Pay any tax owing on a self-lodged return. Payment on Monday 23 November is treated as on time | Self-lodgers with a tax bill |
| 31 March 2027 | Lodge through an agent if your last return had $20,000 or more in tax payable | Some agent clients |
| 15 May 2027 | Lodge through an agent | Most individuals on an agent’s list by 31 October |
| 5 June 2027 | Lodge and pay without a late lodgment penalty (a concession, not a due date) | Agent clients with a 15 May due date |
| 30 June 2027 | Lodge your 2025–26 return, regardless of any extension | Families receiving Child Care Subsidy or Family Tax Benefit |
Important: Registered tax-agent lodgement dates depend on the applicable ATO program and individual circumstances. Confirm the effective dates for the 2026–27 program, including any weekend adjustments and concessions, before relying on the dates above.
One catch: if an earlier year’s return was still outstanding at 30 June 2026, your 2025–26 return may stay due on 31 October 2026, even with an agent.
“Missed the Tax Deadline” Can Mean Three Different Things
Situation 1: It’s Not 2 November Yet, and You Haven’t Lodged
If you’re lodging your own return, you’re still within the effective deadline. Nothing has necessarily gone wrong. Gather your documents, check your income and deductions, and lodge before the cutoff.
Situation 2: You Meant to Use an Accountant but Never Booked In
The later lodgement dates only apply if you’re formally added to the agent’s client list before 31 October. Asking for a quote doesn’t count, so contact us this week, not Friday afternoon.
Situation 3: The Date Has Already Passed
Don’t freeze. myTax stays open after the tax filing deadline, and you can still lodge. What changes is that penalties and interest can start building, so the sooner you lodge, the less it’s likely to cost.
What to Do Before 2 November
1. Log in to myGov today and link your account to the ATO.
2. Make sure your employer has marked your income statement as “tax ready”. If it isn’t, chase your payroll team now, not on the 30th.
3. Gather what pre-fill doesn’t know. Work-related expenses, working-from-home hours, donations, rental property records, share or crypto sales, and any side income.
4. Check pre-filled figures against your own records. Bank interest, dividends, and managed fund distributions are common trouble spots.
5. Decide: DIY or agent? A simple return (one job, a few deductions) is usually fine in myTax. If you have a rental property, business income, capital gains or foreign income, or you’re just not confident, book an agent before 31 October.
6. Lodge, save the lodgment confirmation, and keep your records for five years from the lodgement date.
Is It Possible to Extend My Tax Return Due Date?
You may be able to obtain additional time, depending on your circumstances. Two options are worth exploring.
1. Through a registered tax agent.
The main route is joining a registered tax agent’s client list before 31 October, which gives most individuals until 15 May 2027 (some get an earlier date, for example 31 March 2027).
2. By asking the ATO for a deferral.
If serious illness, a natural disaster, or a family emergency stops you from lodging on time, ask before the due date if you can, explain what happened, and propose a realistic new date.
What Happens If I Lodge My Tax Return Late?
Two separate costs can apply: a late-lodgement penalty, and interest on any tax that’s paid late.
How Much Is the Late Lodgment Penalty in 2026?
The ATO calculates the failure to lodge (FTL) penalty using penalty units. From 1 July 2026, one Commonwealth penalty unit is worth $364.
For individuals and small businesses, the ATO can charge one penalty unit for every 28 days (or part of 28 days) that a return is overdue, up to a maximum of five units.
| How late you lodge | Penalty units | Penalty amount |
| 1 to 28 days | 1 | $364 |
| 29 to 56 days | 2 | $728 |
| 57 to 84 days | 3 | $1,092 |
| 85 to 112 days | 4 | $1,456 |
| 113 days or more | 5 | $1,820 (maximum) |
These figures describe the potential penalty calculation, not a charge that every late taxpayer will automatically receive. The applicable rules, including entity classification and any statutory exemptions, must be considered.
Are Late-Lodgement Penalties Automatic?
No. Although the ATO can impose a failure-to-lodge penalty, it generally does not apply penalties in isolated cases of late lodgement. It may also refrain from imposing a penalty where a late return results in a refund or nil outcome, subject to applicable exceptions.
If a penalty is imposed, you may be able to request full or partial remission where there are valid grounds. The ATO considers individual circumstances, including serious illness, natural disasters and other circumstances beyond a taxpayer’s control.
However, you should not assume a penalty will be waived. Lodge any outstanding return as soon as possible and contact the ATO or your registered tax agent if you need help.
Is Interest Charged on Unpaid Tax?
Yes. General interest charge (GIC) can apply if you do not pay tax by the applicable payment due date.
This is separate from a late-lodgement penalty. Missing the tax return lodgement deadline does not, by itself, mean interest starts accruing that day.
For a self-lodged return resulting in a tax bill, payment is generally due by 21 November. In 2026, that date falls on a Saturday, so the usual next-business-day rule moves the payment deadline to Monday 23 November, subject to the applicable ATO rules and assessment timing.
If you lodge late, the relevant payment date may still apply. Check your notice of assessment and ATO account to confirm when payment is due.
The GIC rate changes quarterly and interest can compound daily. Confirm the applicable rate for October–December 2026 against the ATO’s official rate table before publishing a specific percentage.
How Can I Avoid Missing the Next Deadline?
The 2026–27 financial year’s standard self-lodgement deadline of 31 October 2027 falls on a Sunday. Under the usual next-business-day rule, the effective deadline moves to Monday 1 November 2027.
Save receipts as you go.
The myDeductions tool in the ATO app lets you snap and store receipts all year, so you don’t have to hunt for anything in October.
